One of the most iconic cultural objects of Fiji and the South Pacific islands is the kava bowl or “tanoa”. Historically it was reserved for the highest chiefs of tribes and local society. Today, plain kava bowls are used by family and friends as they gather around to serve kava, which is an earthy-flavored tea known as “yaqona” or “grog”. It is made from mixing water with the powdered root of a pepper plant. Our kava bowls are beautifully carved from native hardwoods and then stained to highlight the various engraved patterns, designs and images of marine and plant life. They are perfect for higher-end tropical décor and settings.
This bowl is simply finished and highlights the natural woodgrain. It features mother-of-pearl accents on the rim. No two are ever identical. Not for use with food or drink, for decorative purposes only. All sizes are approximate, there will be variations in lengths, widths and in heights. If a bowl does not sit completely level, this is normal as hand carved pieces do not have exact measurements. Made in Fiji.
