Fijian Tanoa Bowl – Miniature

One of the most iconic cultural objects of Fiji and the South Pacific islands is the tanoa bowl. Historically it was reserved for the highest chiefs of tribes and local society. Today, plain tanoa or “kava” bowls are used by family and friends as they gather around to serve kava, which is an earthy-flavored tea known as “yaqona” or “grog”. It is made from mixing water with the powdered root of a pepper plant. Our tanoa bowls are beautifully carved from native hardwoods and then stained to highlight the various engraved patterns, designs and images of marine and plant life. They are perfect for higher-end tropical decor and settings.

These little bowls feature a sea turtle in the center with different tribal carvings on the edge of each bowl. These edge carvings are randomly created by the artist and cannot be specifically ordered. No two are ever identical. Not for use with food or drink, for decorative purposes only. All sizes are approximate, there will be variations in lengths, widths and in heights. If a bowl does not sit completely level, this is normal as handcarved pieces do not have exact measurements.
